Creeping back in...

Mon Oct 25, 2004, 6:53 PM
After Alone in the Woods [link] came out so well, I haven't been able to match it.

That's a staggering blow, to believe you've drawn the best thing you'll ever draw. Why bother to do anything else? I doodled variously after, but no actual art, nothing I felt was good enough to colour.

Then a couple months ago I forced myself to start on a piece of RO fanart of a priestess, but I've never finished it, not for lack of effort on the peice or desire to finish it (I quite like it, although it has a fair number of technical issues) but because my monitor no longer displays the colour red. This makes "finishing" any piece of artwork impossible.

Not one retail store in Barbados has or will import a 21" monitor for me. Which means we'll have to import it. Ever lifted a 21" monitor? Shipping will be a monster, probably coming close to the price of the monitor itself for anything faster than 8 weeks.

That's been the problem for a while now. So I haven't even doodled much cuz I couldn't finish anything I started.

Today I put pencil to paper for the first time since we moved (oh, I moved) with no particular inspiration and scribbled my monk. I thought it came out reasonably well, particularly considering my lack of practice. There's obvious body errors (where the hell is his shoulder going?! what's up with his chest?!) but it was nice to do something again.

It's completely unfinished, at least compared to my average art, just pencil on paper and very rough, since I normally do all my shading and polishing on the computer, so it's in scraps.

It was encouraging. My first male (albeit with no eyes, convenient!). Maybe I'm back? Dunno yet. Hi anyone who might care, in any case :)

Doc: You know, I really think we should try a non-violent approach to resolve this.
O'Malley: I agree, except replace the word 'non' with 'extremely' and after the word 'violent' include the phrase 'blood explosion extraordinaire'!

No probs, your art is nothing short of inspirational :) Very very nice work.

One day in late January 2004, I decided I'd try out one of those how to draw tutorials. I did 3 1/4 page facial sketches in a sketch book that actually looked human. Then I did a full page face sketch and it was even better. 2 more full page faces and I was hooked, bought art pads, pencils etc.

A month later I bought a new scanner, started inking and have been messing around with computer colouring. I'm not too hot on flesh toning, but I'm practicing, and above all I'm enjoying it.

I'm drawing now without tutorials and trying to develop my own basic style. I haven't drawn a successful male to date, but female projects are so much nicer to look at anyway.

I'm joining deviant art cuz I feel confident enough now to have other people critique my work without blowing my confidence in continuing to learn, and to get tips and suggestions from other artists.
